The tonka bean is also called Mexican vanilla. The intensely aromatic seed is grated like nutmeg and then used in dishes. Tonka beans add a finishing touch to puddings, ice cream, rice pudding, cookies and cakes. In South America, the indigenous people attribute magical and healing powers to the seed. Carried in a wallet, it is said to bring prosperity and success and was used as an official means of payment in Venezuela until the 1940s.
